DEFCON 27 + 28

Rogues Village
2019 at the Flamingo Hotel | Las Vegas, NV
2020 Remote on Twitch

In August of 2019, Four Suits Co. brought the world of magic to the world of hacking and hosted the first village by magicians at the world’s largest hacking conference.

Rogues Village is as designed to hold workshops and exclusive talks on alternative approaches to existing security concepts by looking to non-traditional areas of knowledge.
Our emphasis was on Social Engineering and Physical Security; incorporating expertise from the worlds of magic, sleight of hand, con games, and advantage play.

Talks cover topics ranging from secret communication methods used by nineteenth century mediums to physical techniques of a modern pickpocket.
Demos and workshops also give attendees hands-on opportunities to experience these non-traditional methods.

How to promote at a conference that forbids photos? Lean into it.

Magic and hacking are not networks that co-mingle often, if ever. Magicians, while considered the enigmatic recluse of entertainment world, are not immediately linked with regard to social engineering and hacking systems – but damn, are they good at it. The team took a risk and decided we want a seat at this underground table and made the move to host a village at the infamous Def Con.

We were fresh blood for the hacking community, no one was familiar with who we are but we were determined to make an impression. There are a lot of rules and parameters to consider that defy what most people expect when promoting their work at the conference. Many attendees at this cannot risk exposing their identities as their line of work is extremely confidential so photos, unless censored or unidentifiable, are strictly forbidden.

We leaned into these obstacles and created promotional content that made being discreet look cool all while garnering attention for people to visit our village. Def Con recognized our campaign for it and shared it on their social channels too which was sweet.

But by far the most exciting was to see RX Gamble speak for the first time to an audience about her expertise in advantage play. Even Jason England (card shark extraordinaire) attended and it was a sight to behold. She was truly epic.
